Once, he had been a clerk at a municipal office, handling permits and signatures, a man whose life fit into neat columns and a single recurring salary. When the program changed and the vendors moved in, he was shuffled out like an obsolete form. The clerk inside him had no use for the dark that began to press in at the corners of his day.
