Her mother’s voicemail was the kind that rearranges priorities. “Kristy, it’s your aunt. Call me.” No details, only an urgency that made Kristy’s chest tighten. The city blurred past the airplane window: a lattice of lights, then a smear of cloud. She imagined everything that could be wrong and, irrationally, things that could be right. Maybe her aunt needed help with the house sale. Maybe there was a letter. Maybe, impossibly, a reason to stay.

Despite her professional success, Kristy's personal life was a different story. She had few close relationships, and her dating life was virtually non-existent. Her colleagues at the Times often joked that she was married to her job, and they weren't far off.
