The story follows Ella of Frell, who is given a "gift" at birth by a fairy named Lucinda: the gift of obedience. This forces Ella to obey any command given to her, regardless of her wishes. As she grows up, she embarks on a quest to find Lucinda and break the curse, encountering ogres, giants, and a charming prince along the way.
